Free Thalassemia Bone Marrow Transplant Evaluation camp in association with at Narayana Super speciality Hospital Howrah & DATRI.

Total Patient and family Member Screened –73 patients and family members

On the occasion of International Thalassemia Day (8th of May),we organized a free HLA camp for Patient and Family members to identify prospective matched donor for Thalassaemia patients in association with Datri Stem Cell Donor Registry.

Through this initiative 73 patients and family members were screened for HLA (Human Leukocyte Antigen ). The patient families were explained about the importance of HLA typing and its necessity in finding a matched sibling donor for bone marrow transplant. Ms. BindiyaSawhney from DATRI (Regional Head, North) and Ms. ReenaPatowari participated in the event and collected HLA samples.

All the participants were explained about the importance of finding a match for transplant for HLA. The camp also included a lecture session followed by a press meet. Mr. TapaniGhosh (Director of Narayana Hospital, Howrah) elated over this joint venture and delivered his gratitude. Echoing similar sentiments, Prof. (Dr.) UtpalChaudhuri (President of KHERI, Ex-director, Institute of Haematology& Transfusion Medicine, Medical College, Kolkata) welcomed all and initiated the day’s activity.Prof. (Dr.) Rajib De ( NRS DESIGNATION, (Consultant Hematologist, Haemato-oncologist & Clinical Lead BMT program, Narayana Hospital, Howrah) and working secretary clarified the treatment strategies and associated difficulties for thalassaemic patients and explained how Bone Marrow Transplant remains the only curative treatment He judiciously explained the importance of HLA typing. In this regard, the representatives of DATRI also clarified how the organization serves as India’s largest unrelated Stem Cell Donors Registry. The lecture session was followed by lamp lightening and brief words from other eminent personalities as well. The session concluded with introduction of the Thalassaemia – Check up Privilege Card collaboratively by members from Narayana Hospital, DATRI and KHERI. Dr.Rajib De attended the press meet.

Following the lecture session and press meet, the health camp continued. Each participant was handed over with the Privilege Card for completely free future health check-ups in Narayana Hospital. The participants were also provided with refreshment and children were given small appreciation tokens.

The entire event of 7th May concluded with compilation of all the participant forms, samples and entries of the day. All the reports were confirmed to be communicated by DATRI after about 60 days to registered mail id of Narayana Hospital. Hospital authorities corroborated to provide the same to each of the respective participants accordingly.

The overall health awareness camp was a successful endeavor manifested through a cooperative effort.
